PeapodStop & Shop Extending Reach on Long Island, N.Y.
CHICAGO -- Internet grocer Peapod, LLC, based here, and Quincy, Mass.-based Stop & Shop are expanding their online grocery purchasing and delivery service to more areas on Long Island, NY, with deliveries starting March 6.
The expansion encompasses the Long Island communities of Ronkonkama, Holbrook, Medford, and Shirley. In addition, in the next few weeks, Peapod plans to branch out to Commack, Northport, Coram, Smithtown, and other Long Island towns.
Site visitors are able create personal lists, read nutrition information online, quickly sort products by price or by nutrition criteria, and use personalized online coupons. Stop & Shop cardholders can expedite their first online shopping trip by entering their card number online and accessing a list of items they've bought at their local Stop & Shop.
Peapod can deliver groceries as soon as the day after an order is placed, the partners said. The service's order-fulfillment technology and proprietary transportation routing system are designed to accuracy and efficiency in picking, packing, and delivering grocery orders, according to Peapod.
"Stop & Shop is very happy to be offering delivery service as another shopping option to more customers on Long Island," noted Stop & Shop c.e.o. Marc Smith. (Earlier this week, Smith said he was leaving the company, but would stay indefinitely until a successor is found.)

Peapod serves 16 U.S. markets, including the metro areas of Chicago, Boston, Long Island, and Washington, D.C., as well as communities in the states of Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Rhode Island. The service has made more than 7 million deliveries since its first in 1990.
