Peapod Cuts Delivery Prices to Tri-State Car Poolers

SKOKIE, Ill. -- Peapod by Stop & Shop here has joined the Tri-State 5,000,000 Mile Rideshare Challenge, a regional transportation event bringing together New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut commuters, sponsors, and local government agencies to help ease some of the area's transportation and air quality problems in the near future. To that end, the Internet grocer has become a 150,000 Mile reward sponsor providing delivery service discounts to commuters sharing rides on NuRide, the country's first incentive-based ridesharing network.

"Providing NuRide members with valuable incentives to share rides and reduce traffic congestion matches beautifully with our goal of offering consumers a more efficient way to shop for groceries," said Peapod director of marketing Peg Merzbacher in a statement.

The challenge, which began early this year, will involve thousands of commuters, who will share rides leading to 5,000,000 fewer miles driven and over 2,100 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions. To take part the program, commuters use NuRide's online ridesharing program to find other people going their way. The NuRide Web site calculates the savings for each confirmed ridesharing trip and awards participants with points that can be redeemed for an assortment of rewards provided by corporate sponsors.

A wholly owned subsidiary of Royal Ahold, Peapod serves 18 U.S. markets, including the metro areas of Chicago, Milwaukee, Boston, suburban New York City, and Washington, D.C., as well as communities in Illinois, Wisconsin, Maryland, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Virginia, Rhode Island, and New Jersey. The company has made over 10 million deliveries since it began in the late 1980s.
