Pathmark Installs Workflow System To Facilitate Printing of Price Labels, Signs

CARTERET, N.J. - Pathmark Stores, Inc. is upgrading its merchandising database with the SignIQ workflow to facilitate the printing of shelf-edge labels and other in-store signage.

The retailer has completed the first phase of the installation that covers Direct-Store Delivery (DSD) products across all categories. A department-by-department rollout is scheduled over the next 18 months.

"We are installing SignIQ as both a central print solution and as an in-store print solution for ad hoc needs such as replacing a damaged sign," said Rick Thompson, manager of graphic arts and printing for Pathmark.

SignIQ uses a Windows-based process to produce, deploy and manage shelf-edge labels and in-store signage working through an open, integrated solution or as an extension of an existing database. Pathmark has deployed SignIQ as an extension of its Lawson merchandising system.

"One of the reasons that we bought into SignIQ is that it doesn’t require a separate database with descriptive sign information that is apart from my main merchandising system," said Thompson. "SignIQ is a plug in. I have one version of the truth, which is the Lawson merchandising system. We then take feeds out of that system to produce our weekly signs and labels."

The shelf-edge labels and signs largely feature product names and prices. However, they sometimes convey advertising and marketing messages such as "Half-Price Sale" or "New Item," which is easily accommodated by the SignIQ solution.
