Pathmark Gospel Choir Competition Goes International

For the first time in its history, the Pathmark Gospel Choir Competition will have an international flavor, with the addition of a choir from the Canadian province of Quebec. The competition, which will take place Feb. 28 at the World Financial Center Winter Garden in New York, caps off Black History Month by bringing top choirs together to compete for $10,000 in prizes.

In addition to the Quebec choir, other participating choirs will represent metropolitan New York and many other U.S. states. There is no charge for admission to the program. Youth Division choirs (age 18 and under) will compete beginning at 10:30 a.m., with winners announced at 12:30 p.m. Open Division choirs will compete from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Pathmark assists many competing choirs with travel costs.

Thousands of local churches support the event and millions more have experienced it on television and radio or live. 2009 is the 20th year that Pathmark has hosted productions honoring minority cultures, and its ninth year as title sponsor of the Pathmark Gospel Choir Competition.
