Pathmark Closing Two Stores

CARTERET, N.J. -- Pathmark here will shutter two underperforming stores this month, one in Warminster, Pa. and another in Freehold, N.J.

The supermarkets, which each measure about 50,000 square feet, will close by the end of the month, Harvey Gutman, the regional supermarket chain's s.v.p. of retail development, told Progressive Grocer. He added that union workers would be offered the opportunity to work at other Pathmark locations, and that the stores would either be leased or sold.

The motivation for the closing was financial. In an interview with local press Gutman said of the Warminster store, "It's been there a long time, and we hated to leave the community. It was a financial decision and had to be made...It was not made lightly. The store's been underperforming for quite a while."

Under the leadership of new c.e.o. John Standley, the Northeast chain, which has had financial woes of late, has been working to increase overall sales through an overhaul of its stores, focusing on perishables, new general merchandise categories, and improving the overall appearance of locations. The two closures will reduce the number of Pathmark's supermarket portfolio in the New York-New Jersey metro area and Philadelphia to 141 units.
