Pa. Liquor Board Expands Presence in Supermarkets
HARRISBURG, Pa. - As part of the most progressive changes made to reform Pennsylvania's antiquated liquor laws, the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board has announced plans for two more new stores within supermarkets for the Philadelphia region.
The new state-run liquor stores within supermarkets will both be in Bucks County -- one inside a Super Fresh store in Fairless Hills and the other in Yardley, inside a McCaffrey's supermarket that's currently being rebuilt after a fire.
Aside from being located in areas that are reportedly currently underserved by state stores, the new locations are close to New Jersey, which attracts many Pennsylvania residents to cross the state line to purchase wine and spirits.
The two new supermarket operations are expected to open by the end of the year. The PLCB's first store-within-a-store opened late last year in a Montgomery County Clemens Market.
The board said that the supermarket outlets have contributed to record state liquor sales -- $1.14 billion for the year to date vs. $1.06 billion for the same period last year.
The PLCB opened its first store within a supermarket in the western part of the state in the Shop 'n Save in Bridgeville. The PLCB plans to have at least seven One Stop Shops operating by the end of 2004. Sites in Mount Pocono, Monroe County, and Boothwyn, Delaware County, have been identified, and negotiations are under way for additional sites around the state.
