Pa. Agriculture Program Wins Technology Award
HARRISBURG, Pa. -- The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture here has earned a national technology award for a Web-based program aimed at protecting the state's millions of livestock and poultry flocks from the outbreak of disease.
The program, Pennsylvania Animal Health Emergency Response and Diagnostic system (PAHERDS), received the American Council for Technology's 2006 Intergovernmental Solutions Award. It was one of three honorees in the state and local awards category. Winning programs are selected by a panel of government and IT professionals who consider a list of criteria, including innovation and impact on business practices.
PAHERDS, which consolidates 24 separate programs into one database, was designed to work with state and federal animal health certification programs, disease surveillance initiatives, and licensing activities. It's available to animal scientists and animal health officials to help prevent, detect, contain, and eradicate outbreaks of dangerous diseases among animals.
