OBITUARY: Karen Shapira, Wife of Giant Eagle C.E.O., 60

Visitation services are being held today for Karen Shapira -- wife of Giant Eagle chairman and c.e.o. David Shapira and mother of Laura Karet, Giant Eagle's s.v.p. of retail operations -- who died earlier this week after a brave battle with breast cancer.

Mrs. Shapira, 60, a leader in Allegheny County's United Way and in Pittsburgh and national Jewish organizations, was a resident of Fox Chapel. She directed the Israel and overseas activities of United Jewish Communities of North America. She previously headed the United Jewish Federation in Pittsburgh.
She and her husband, David, also co-chaired local United Way campaigns.

In addition to her husband and daughter Laura, Mrs. Shapira is survived by daughter Deborah Shapira and son Jeremy Shapira.

Memorial contributions may be sent to the David and Karen Shapira Philanthropic Fund of United Jewish Federation Foundation, 234 McKee Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15213.
