NuVal Coming to Robért Fresh Market
First it was “Guiding Stars,” now it’s NuVal. A few weeks after New Orleans-area gourmet grocer Langenstein’s introduced the Guiding Stars nutrition rating program in its two stores, the NuVal Nutritional Scoring System will be available at the Robért Fresh Market chain of family-owned stores in the Crescent City and Metairie, La., in early 2012.
Under the NuVal system, thousands of foods receive a score from 1 to 100, with higher scores denoting better nutrition. Scores are posted on supermarket shelf tags right next to the price, making it easy for shoppers to compare the overall nutrition of the foods before they purchase them. NuVal scores are currently offered in more than 1,500 grocery stores across the United States, including Price Cutter, King Soopers, Tops, King Kullen, Price Chopper, Hy-Vee, Meijer, Brookshire’s, Big Y, Skogen’s Festival Foods, Food City, United Supermarkets, Mariano’s Fresh Market, Lowes Foods, Scolari’s Food and Drug, Raley’s, and select Giant Eagle, Coborn’s and Metro Market locations.

Created by Dr. David Katz and a dozen top nutrition science experts, NuVal features the ONQI (Overall Nutritional Quality Index), the scientific engine used to determine the system’s scores. NuVal scores are calculated for a wide variety of categories, among them meat, seafood, poultry, salty snacks, milk, yogurt, vegetables (fresh, frozen and canned), cereal, bread, cookies, soft drinks, and crackers.
