Now Open: Aloha Petroleum & CEFCO

NATIONAL REPORT – The convenience store industry landscape is constantly changing as chains open and close stores each week. On a regular basis, Convenience Store News highlights these comings and goings in this special roundup.

Here are the latest company spotlights:

Aloha Petroleum Ltd.

Aloha Petroleum reopened its Aloha Island Mart and fueling station in Waianae, Hawaii, and along with Foodland Super Market Ltd., opened a new gas station at the Kehalani Village Center on Maui.

A number of green efficiencies are included in the redesign of the Waianae location, including the installation of 12 LED canopy light fixtures and 46 photovoltaic solar panels. Made of recyclable, non-toxic material, the energy-efficient LED lights will reduce electricity consumption from 460 watts to 94 watts per light fixture and save on replacement costs due to the product’s longer lifespan. Additionally, the solar panels are expected to produce 25 percent of the store's electrical power consumption, the retailer said.

“This is part of a larger initiative to show our aloha to the environment by moving toward more sustainable, energy-efficient green technologies that will translate to direct savings to the bottom line,” said Richard Parry, president and CEO of Honolulu-based Aloha Petroleum.

To date, the company has installed canopy LED lighting at 21 of its locations throughout Hawaii and also installed solar panels at five other locations, resulting in an electrical consumption reduction of between 20 percent and 45 percent, depending upon the store’s location.

The renovation of the Waianae location also included the installation of a new fuel canopy, upgraded fuel pumps, and interior improvements that allow for more generous aisles and optimal food and beverage displays such as an expanded selection of hot and cold snack items.

The new Foodland Gas Station is located on the corner of Maui Lani Parkway and Kehalani Village Drive, across from a Long’s Drugs store. This is the fourth joint venture for the two companies. The station sells three grades of gasoline -- Regular, Plus and Super -- as well as diesel fuel.

CEFCO Convenience Stores

CEFCO, based in Temple, Texas, reopened two existing sites -- one located at 3750 Lamar Ave. in Paris, Texas, and the other at 1917 Bell St. in Amarillo, Texas -- both representing the company’s new prototype design. The retailer has several more new stores planned for later this year.

Both prototype stores incorporate a number of innovative enhancements, made possible by an open, fresh design with modern treatments and upgraded finishes, according to the company.

Susser Holdings Corp./Stripes

Susser Holdings, parent to Stripes convenience stores, opened a new location in Lubbock, Texas. The Corpus Christi, Texas-based chain held a grand opening in early February, during which it presented a $1,000 donation to representatives from the Lubbock High School and its Parent-Teacher Association.

The 7,000-square-foot Lubbock store features Stripes' proprietary Laredo Taco Co. food program; 10 Phillips 66-branded fuel dispensers offering unleaded, unleaded plus and diesel; and a dining area that seats 32. There is also a “beer super cooler,” set to cool what's inside to below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Additionally, the latest Stripes store added more than 30 new jobs to the Lubbock community, according to Susser Holdings, which currently operates 627 Stripes stores.

Turkey Hill Minit Markets

Turkey Hill Minit Markets replaced its store at 110 Memorial Highway in Dallas, Pa., with a new, larger location at 4003 Memorial Highway that boasts an updated design and expanded product offering.

The new store gives area residents and visitors access to fuel, food and essential grocery and household items.
