New Minyard Owner Rolls Up His Sleeves

COPPELL, Texas - Following a tour of 42 of his 69 newly-acquired stores, Ron Johnson, Minyard's new owner, is already getting down to work surveying his new company.

When asked how he planned to address the tough competition that was a major factor in the Minyard family leaving the business, he said the challenge was nothing new. "While I can't speak for the Minyard family, this is the third major market I've operated in," he told Progressive Grocer. "Each market I've been in has had every major competitor, and where we needed to, we made significant changes. Minyard is doing very well; it's a profitable company."

As he did with his previous grocery chains, Johnson plans to examine the market demographics and evaluate which stores need remodeling or expansion. "Three months from now you'll start to see things happening," he said. "For now, we'll make observations and continue to focus on the customer."
