New Albertsons to Close Extreme Inc. and 25 Super Savers

BOISE, Idaho -- Albertsons LLC plans to close Extreme Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary that operates 27 price-impact Super Saver Foods stores in the Southwest. Only two Utah Super Saver stores will remain open, under Albertsons' Rocky Mountain division.

A chain spokesperson told Progressive Grocer the move to effectively shutter the discount banner's operation in the region was not related to the new owners' earlier disclosed plans for pruning of the ranks of Albertsons banner stores.

"This is completely separate from last week's announcement about the Albertsons store closings," said Chris Wilcox, director of public affairs. "Extreme Inc. is wholly-owned but completely separately operated from Albertsons. It was Extreme's decision."

Last week, Albertsons said it would close 100 underperforming Albertsons stores, and stated that no further closings were eminent.

Super Saver Foods stores sell brand-name products at lower prices and in more limited assortments than a traditional Albertsons store.
