Nation's Food Bank Names H-E-B Regional Retailer of the Year
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here said Friday it has been named Regional Retailer of the Year by America's Second Harvest, in recognition of its hunger prevention efforts in Texas and Mexico.
H-E-B received the recognition at this year's Hunger's Hope Awards, held in Dallas on Feb. 16. This is the third time H-E-B has received the prestigious honor.
The awards recognize outstanding contributions from corporations, food banks, and individuals that support America's Second Harvest's mission to create a hunger-free America. H-E-B was nominated for the award by several of America's Second Harvests affiliate food banks in Texas.
"H-E-B embodies the highest level of dedication a corporation can put forth to help end hunger. This is demonstrated through its generous donations of food, funds, and volunteers," said Robert Forney, president and c.e.o., America's Second Harvest, in a statement. "We are proud to recognize H-E-B and its Food Bank Assistance Program as one of the strongest supporters of hunger-prevention programs in the United States."
The H-E-B Food Bank Assistance Program was established in 1982, and has since then delivered more than 550 million pounds of food, non-foods, perishables, over-the-counter drugs, pastries, and bread to food banks in Texas and Mexico. Currently, the program supports 14 America's Second Harvest Food Banks in Texas and 7 of Mexico's Mexican Association of Food Banks. In turn, these food banks distribute the goods to more than 4,000 non-profit organizations serving 200 counties in Texas and three states in Mexico.
In 2005 alone, H-E-B donations in Texas and Mexico reached 25.7 millions pounds valued at approximately $29.7 million. H-E-B's additional support of food banks includes donations of critical operations equipment such as forklifts, storage rack systems, freezers, coolers, and staff training and consulting support.
"In Texas where one out of every five adults and one out of every four children live in poverty and have difficulty meeting basic nutritional needs, H-E-B is proud to lead efforts that combat hunger and malnutrition," said Winell Herron, H-E-B group v.p. of public affairs and diversity. "By raising awareness about hunger in our nation and assisting our food bank networks, we can all make a difference in reversing these numbers."
America's Second Harvest is the nation's largest charitable hunger-relief organization. It supports approximately 50,000 local charitable agencies operating more than 94,000 programs including food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after-school programs, and Kids Cafes.
