More Grocery Outlets Coming to Seattle Area
Berkeley, Calif. - Privately owned extreme-value retailer Grocery Outlet, which has maintained a presence in the Seattle-Tacoma region since 1984, is adding three new stores there over the next three months, bringing the total number of the company's stores in the state to 26.
"Historically we have done very well in Washington," said v.p. of marketing Jon Wylie in a statement. "We opened our first store in Yakima in 1981 and have been expanding our presence ever since. We now have 16 stores in the Seattle-Tacoma area, and we're looking hard at other locations in western Washington for further expansion in 2005." Other Washington state Grocery Outlet stores are located in Spokane and Yakima.
The new stores are scheduled to open in Federal Way and Kenmore in December and in Lynnwood in January. Each new location will be about 20,000 square feet and employ about 20 full- and part-time workers.
Wylie noted that the new stores are to be operated by Grocery Outlet independent operators with experience in other stores in Washington and California.
A company spokesperson told Progressive Grocer that in addition to its plans for the Seattle-Tacoma area, it would soon open a new store in Eureka, Calif. in late November or early December. In addition, "We've relocated a store in Visalia, Calif. recently, and are continuing to monitor our markets, business, and opportunities to evaluate the best path for future expansion."
Grocery Outlet is the biggest extreme-value grocer in the United States, with 116 stores in such states as Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington. In 2002 the grocer marked a sales milestone of $500 million.
