Minnesota Grocers Honor Legislator of the Year
The Minnesota Grocers Association (MGA) presented its 2014 MGA Legislator of the Year award to state Sen. Gary Dahms at the group's annual legislative dinner Jan. 28 in St. Paul.
Each year, MGA acknowledges a lawmaker who the group decides has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to the retail food industry. Dahms, a Republican from Redwood Falls in southwestern Minnesota, was recognized for his work last session in advocating for industry’s priorities. "His steadfast commitment against burdensome regulations, costly mandates and government overreach was unwavering in supporting the food industry of Minnesota," MGA declared.
As the minority lead on the Minnesota Senate's Jobs, Agriculture and Rural Development Committee, Dahms distinguished himself with his work with the MGA and other legislators on concerns with youth unemployment and the unintended consequences if a significant increase occurs. His work led to the Senate adopting a “youth wage” in its version of minimum wage legislation.
Common Sense = Growth
"Senator Dahms supports common sense policies that create job growth and spur economic activity," said Jamie Pfuhl, MGA president. "He has shown extraordinary leadership in recognizing the need for competitive fairness, a level playing field for business, and supporting youth employment. A free marketplace that does not place undue burdens on local businesses helps our neighbors keep their shopping baskets full. The industry is honored to have a legislator with his vision on our side."
Representing Minnesota's retail food industry since 1897, MGA has more than 200 retail members with nearly 1,100 stores statewide, plus some100 distributors and manufacturers.
