Minnesota Firm Recalls Beef Due to E.Coli Concerns

WASHINGTON - A Minnesota company said on Tuesday it recalled 194,700 pounds of frozen ground beef because of possible contamination with E. coli bacteria after two people in Colorado became ill.

Privately held Howard Beef Processors, which does business as Ellison Meat Co., launched the recall after health officials reported the illnesses. The two people were hospitalized in mid-July, the U.S. Agriculture Department said.

"A common product which both individuals consumed was our ground beef patties ... but testing for a direct match is still in process," the company, based in Pipestone, Minn., said in a statement.

The beef was produced between May 30 and June 11 and distributed nationwide to hotels, restaurants and through door-to-door sales. Some of it was also exported to Mexico.

"For customer concern and precautionary measures, we are notifying our distributors and customers to return all product produced in the time frame specified," the company said.
