Meijer Program Gives Local Music Top Billing

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Meijer Inc. here is giving local musicians a new way to break into the music industry with the launch of "Outside the Mainstream," a monthly musical spotlight program launched this week that will offer low-priced compact discs produced by unsigned musicians.

Each month, Meijer will select one artist or group from communities where Meijer stores are located. Beginning this month, the Meijer spotlight will be on Joshua Davis, a Lansing musician.

Meijer said it will feature selected local artists in its advertising circulars that reach 7 million households, and will buy 1,000 of the featured artists' CDs for distribution and sale at $7.49 each chainwide.

"The goal of the program is to bring some of the talent we find in our own backyards to a wider audience than they can normally reach by themselves," said Stacie Behler, spokeswoman for Meijer.
