Meijer Opens Eight More Ethanol Pumps Across Michigan
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - On the heels of opening its first ethanol pump in Warren, Mich. last month, Meijer Inc. based here opened eight additional E85 ethanol fueling stations across the state.
"Choosing E85 just got a lot easier for Meijer customers in east, central and west Michigan," said Hank Meijer, Meijer's co-c.e.o. and co-chairman. "We know that more and more customers are buying flex fuel vehicles and we want to be able to provide our customers with convenience while supporting the use of cleaner burning fuels, like ethanol."
Meijer, General Motors, CleanFUEL USA, and the State of Michigan began a collaborative partnership to increase awareness and use of the ethanol based fuel back in April of this year. Since then, local GM dealers have promoted Meijer refueling stations when customers purchase its flex-fuel vehicles.
GM currently has more than two million FlexFuel vehicles on the road capable of using E85 ethanol fuel, and the addition of these Meijer stations will allow those drivers to choose E85, said the grocer.
"Michigan is home to one of the largest concentrations of GM's E85 flexible fuel vehicles in the country, with more than 140,000 in use," said Elizabeth Lowery, GM's v.p. of environment and energy.
Meijer said it will shortly announce the locations of 11 more E85 ethanol fueling stations across the state to complete its commitment to a total of 20 E85 locations in Michigan before the end of 2006.
Meijer, which operates 176 supercenters featuring over 40 departments throughout Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio, will be nationally recognized in Progressive Grocer's December 2006 issue as its Retailer of the Year.
