Meijer Breaks Ground on Major Addition to Central Kitchen Facility

Meijer, Inc. is preparing to broaden its fresh bakery lineup with the construction of a new bakery facility at the company’s Middlebury, Ind.-based foodservice operation.

The 37,000-square-foot bakery addition will complement the chain’s existing 184,500-square-foot facility that currently produces its fresh salads and deli products. Meijer's new central bakery will be capable of producing nearly 15 million loaves of bread and more than 130 million cookies annually.

"The bakery area inside our Meijer stores continues to evolve as a destination point," said Bob Mooney, group v.p./distribution operations and manufacturing for the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based chain. “The addition of this impressive bakery facility will help us continue to raise the bar on quality, freshness, and variety."

Mooney said the new bakery represents a more than $10 million-plus investment. The operation will start production during the first quarter of 2009.

Meijer operates 182 supercenters throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky.
