Medical Marts to Close In-Store Clinics

Medical Marts, a Las Vegas-based in-store clinic operator, closed more than a dozen clinics in the last month in Illinois, Missouri, Virginia and Utah, including several facilities at Shopko stores and Meijer supercenter locations, reportedly because its bankrollers pulled out.

Dr. Kenneth Richmond, a Wilmette physician who is v.p. and chief medical officer of Medical Marts, told The Chicago Tribune that the venture capitalists backing the company decided to pursue other areas with their funding.

Unlike typical retail clinics that are largely staffed by nurse practitioners, Medical Marts staffed its clinics with two full-time primary-care physicians, and two full-time medical assistants or licensed practical nurses. However, employing physicians means they are more expensive to operate than those with only nurse practitioners.
