Marsh Swings for ALS at Benefit Outing

Marsh Supermarkets raised more than $50,000 at its second annual golf outing held last month to benefit the ALS Association's Indiana Chapter.

"I, along with all of our 6,000 associates pledge to do our part to support the ALS Association Indiana Chapter," said Tom O’Boyle, president, CEO and chairman of Marsh Supermarkets, which operates 73 stores in Indiana and Ohio, and 37 Indiana pharmacy locations.

Underscoring the Indianapolis-based retailer's commitment to fighting what is often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease, Marsh has already secured a date for its third annual event that will take place on June 15, 2016, to once again assist the Indiana Chapter and support the many programs and services provided to those battling ALS.

Funds raised from Marsh Supermarkets' golf outing supports many invaluable efforts for ALS Association Indiana Chapter, according to its Executive Director Cindy Wise, such as the nutrition supplement program, which provides resources and information to assist in the nutritional needs for all stages of disease progression. Weight loss is a common and severe symptom of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), caused both from inadequate calorie intake and an increased metabolic rate.

ALS is a cruel disease, added Wise, who notes that every 90 minutes, someone is diagnosed with ALS. To date, there are more than 300 known individuals living with ALS in Indiana. Currently, no known treatments have been developed that significantly slows or reverses the progression of ALS. By leading the way in global research, support and assistance, the ALS Association is the only non-profit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s disease on every front through a nationwide network of chapters. The association, which coordinates multidisciplinary care through certified clinical care centers, also fosters government partnership while building hope and enhancing the quality of life for those diagnosed while aggressively searching for new treatments and a cure.
