Mapping Technology Paves Way for New Stew Leonard's Store

NORWALK, Conn. -- Stew Leonard's fourth store will soon be opening in Orange, Conn., thanks to the retailer's innovative application of mapping technology.

The mapping software, provided by Troy, N.Y. based MapInfo, helped Stew Leonard's select the location, then ease concerns of local residents about increased traffic Stew Leonard's is known for generating.

"We brought in MapInfo to research the sales potential, thereby allowing traffic conditions to be predicted around the new store, and to devise a strategy for managing this traffic," said Vince Summa, c.f.o. at Stew Leonard's. "Using its Location Intelligence technology, MapInfo analyzed a variety of demographics, estimated the number of patrons the new store could expect to handle, and determined what changes would need to be made to the existing roads. Using this information, we were able to propose methods for effectively controlling the inevitable increase of motorists to the area, including the placement of additional intersections, as well as the modification of traffic-light sequences for existing stoplights."

This analysis became the backbone for a comprehensive study in which consultants specializing in traffic patterns, environmental effects and economic impacts presented to the town's planning committee. As a result, the town decided to allow construction of the new Stew Leonard's, and development is currently underway.
