Longo's Gives Away Free Groceries in April

In keeping with its continuing consumer recognition efforts, Canadian grocery chain Longo's will be rewarding nearly 500 of its most loyal shoppers with free groceries this month -- a prospect made even more exciting for customers by the currently ailing economy.

The Toronto-based company came up with its “Thank You” program asking customers what they needed, which turned out to be cash back savings, coupons and free offers.

"As a retailer, the purpose of a loyalty promotion from our perspective is twofold: 1) to really get to know our best customers and 2) to reward those customers for their shopping loyalty," noted Longo’s spokeswoman Rosanne Longo. "Our Thank You program provides us with a vehicle to communicate with our customers one-on-one. It also lets us surprise and reward them for their loyalty."

During April, Longo's Thank You card members are eligible to win the value of their purchases through the "Swipe to Win" contest. With one random Thank You card winner each day at each of Longo's 17 locations in the greater Toronto area, almost 500 winners will receive free groceries just by swiping their cards at checkout.

"On our part, we try to keep the Thank You card offers interesting for our customers by changing the offers on a regular basis to try to meet the varying needs of our top customers," explained Longo.

Since its rollout in fall 2008, the Thank You program has experienced much positive customer feedback, and enrollment has surpassed company expectations, according to the grocer.
