Loblaw's No Frills Stores Mark 20 Years, Each in Their Own Way

BRAMPTON, Ont. -- No Frills, the value concept of Loblaw Cos., Ltd. here, has begun celebrating the 20th anniversary of the format, which has been adopted by 130 individually owned and operated locations across Ontario.

In 1987 Loblaw "decided to harness the entrepreneurial spirit of local ownership, and created No Frills franchise operations," the retailer recounted in a statement.

"Our various [No Frills] stores will be responsible for their own events, ranging from birthday cake and barbeques for our customers, to events for staff to appreciate their hard work," David Primorac, Loblaw's director, public relations, great food, hard discount, superstore formats, told Progressive Grocer. "We are not planning one overall event that all stores will partake of."

Loblaw is Canada's largest food distributor and a major provider of general merchandise, drug store, and financial products and services. The company is one of the largest private-sector employers in Canada, employing over 139,000 full-time and part-time workers.
