Loblaw One of Canada’s Greenest Employers

Loblaw Cos., Ltd. has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers for 2010, in recognition of the Brampton, Ontario-based grocer’s sustainable programs and efforts to include environmental values in its corporate culture.

“This award is a testament to the hard work of our colleagues, franchise and franchise employees, and their commitment to making environmental initiatives important,” said Loblaw EVP, human resources Judy McCrie.

Employing a network of colleague communication tools and activities, the company has generated awareness and support for environmental initiatives by colleagues, franchises and franchise employees. Its green activities have included WWF-Canada Sweater Day, during which Loblaw corporate and participating franchise stores turned down store thermostats by 3 degrees Celsius, in an effort to show how small changes can make a difference on the environment.

“At Loblaw, respecting the environment is one of the five corporate social responsibility pillars that help guide the way we do business,” noted the company’s VP, corporate affairs, Bob Chant. “We deliver on this commitment by driving innovation in product development, waste reduction, energy efficiency and more — all with the goal of reducing the environmental impact of our operations.”

Other relevant programs include diverting over 1.3 billion plastic shopping bags from landfills since 2007, a commitment to sustainable seafood, the reduction of the company’s carbon footprint by reducing lighting and in-store energy use, on-site waste reduction and diversion, and green product innovation, including the PC G.R.E.E.N line.

Launched in 2007, the Canada’s Greenest Employers competition is organized by the editors of the Canada’s Top 100 Employers project. The designation recognizes employers that create a corporate culture of environmental awareness, have developed exceptional earth-friendly initiatives and attract people to their organizations because of their environmental leadership.

A subsidiary of George Weston Ltd., Loblaw is Canada’s largest food distributor and a leading provider of drug store, general merchandise and financial products and services. The grocer has more than 1,000 corporate and franchised stores across that country, and employs over 138,000 full-time and part-time employees.

In further green news north of the border, the Toronto-based Longo’s grocery chain has introduced a new kind of reusable shopping box at its 20 locations. The first of its kind in Canada, the box, which is made with bacteria-resistant Microban, a bacteria resistant protection, can hold the contents of three shopping bags. Other recent offerings to include Microban technology include reusable bags from Winn-Dixie and Schnucks.
