Lidl is expanding its pilot with online delivery service Shipt, following a successful launch in Greenville, S.C., in October. Beginning Dec. 7, Shipt will deliver Lidl groceries in the metro areas of Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Charlotte (Waxhaw and southwest Charlotte), N.C., as well as those of Spartanburg, Rock Hill and Indian Land, S.C.

The expansion will give more than 500,000 households across both states access to groceries and household items from Lidl delivered by Shipt. To mark the move, new Shipt members who sign before the expansion will receive an annual membership, which normally costs $99, for just $49.

“At Shipt, we’re focused on making life easier for our members,” said Bill Smith, founder and CEO of the service, which has offices in Birmingham, Ala., and San Francisco. “This pilot with Lidl marks a milestone in our continued commitment to provide families with high-quality fresh groceries and essentials from local stores they trust. Lidl is well loved by our members in the Carolinas. Moving into 2018, we plan to continue growing and providing the convenience and quality of grocery delivery to more families across the country.”

“As we continue to grow our store network along the east coast, we remain laser-focused on delivering our customers convenient access to top-quality goods and groceries at the lowest possible prices,” noted Zara Khaleeli, senior project manager at Lidl, whose U.S. headquarters is in Arlington County, Va. “By expanding our pilot with Shipt, we are excited to offer our valued customers another convenient way to receive the affordable, trusted products they have come to expect from Lidl.”

Ahead of the expansion, Shipt plans to hire additional shoppers across the Carolinas, who will be responsible for ensuring complete, accurate fulfillments of each order. The service currently offers quality, personalized grocery delivery to 30 million-plus households in more than 70 markets across the United States.

With more than 10,000 stores in 28 countries, German deep-discount grocer Lidl began opening U.S. stores last June, currently operating more than 45 locations in Delaware, Georgia, New Jersey, North Carolina and South Carolina.
