Layoffs Underway at Shaw's, According to Local Reports

WEST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - With its recent acquisition of Shaw's and Star Markets behind it, Boise, Idaho-based Albertson's Inc. has begun layoffs at the Shaw's corporate office in West Bridgewater, Mass., according to local reports.

A report in the Fall River, Mass.-based Herald News said that more than 200 corporate employees including buyer and district managers, as well as several vice presidents and their support staff, have been laid off, with notices running from 30 days to six months, according to one manager who did not want to be named.

Another published report quoted an Albertsons' spokesman as saying that the chain is seeking to "eliminate redundant management and operational processes," which will reportedly involve at least 100 top-level management positions.

Albertson's, which operates some 2,500 stores in 37 states with annual revenues of $35 billion, completed the $2.4 billion purchase of 204 New England Shaw's and Star Market stores from J. Sainsbury of England on April 30.
