Late Easter Holiday Boosts Cost-U-Less March Comps

BELLEVUE, Wash. -- Grocery warehouse retailer Cost-U-Less Inc. saw a 5 percent increase in March same-store sales, as a late 2006 Easter holiday boosted results.

The company, which operates 11 low-cost stores, primarily in the South Pacific and Carribean, said Easter hurt sales in March 2005 but comes in April this year. Cost-U-Less stores close for one day during the Easter weekend.

The company said Easter's later arrival this year bumped up March same-store sales by 2 percent to 3 percent.

March total sales increased 4.7 percent to $21.5 million versus $20.6 million last year.

For the year to date, the company claimed a 3.7-percent increase in same-store sales, which included a positive impact of 1 percentage point from the late Easter. Total sales increased 2.7 percent to $54.7 million.
