Kroger Bows First Walk-in Clinic In Memphis
MEMPHIS -- Kroger officially opened its first Family Medic walk-in medical clinic in this market this morning, in a partnership program with a local entrpreneur that could see more than 10 clinics up and running by the end of the year.
The clinic, staffed by a nurse practitioner and designed for drop-in patients with minor ailments, had been operating for several weeks to work out the kinks, and since then has been enlarged, the company said.
Memphis entrepreneur Michael Jones owns the new business, and plans to open another 10 clinics by the end of the year. He said he has negotiated with the Cincinnati-based Kroger Co. for a territory that stretches from Little Rock to Jackson, Tenn., and includes Northern Mississippi.
Featuring services such as diagnostic testing and treatment of infections and allergies, the clinic offers a menu-driven approach whereby patients can pick and choose what services they want and what they can pay for. Locations for clinics are generally geared toward lower-income neighborhoods where people are more likely to be uninsured.
Jones also owns Memphis businesses SchoolTran, which provides transportation for medically fragile children, the ambulance service CareStat Logistics, and a durable medical equipment company.
