Kroger Associates in VA Poised for Strike

About 1,100 Virginia-based Kroger associates have voted to authorize a strike amid negotiations over a new pay and benefits contract.

The employees represented by United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400 members unanimously voted Wednesday to reject Kroger’s offer, the Cincinnati Business Courier reported. Associated continue to work under a contract extension that runs through June 4, Kroger Mid-Atlantic region spokesperson Anne Jenkins told the Courier.

Both sides are expected to meet again early next week.

“We look forward to returning to the table and working through issues with the union,” Jenkins told the Courier. “Kroger remains committed to providing all associates a solid and competitive pay and benefits package in this next contract.”

Several Kroger union associates in Roanoke reportedly have pointed to the company’s strong financials and CEO Rodney McMullen’s pay raise last year in arguing for a better contract.
