Key Food Opens 1st Brooklyn Food Emporium

Key Food Stores Co-operative Inc., a chain of primarily independently owned and corporate grocery stores, has debuted The Food Emporium Brooklyn Market, its first store under that banner in the borough. The store is in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn.

At the grand-opening celebration, which took place April 28, state and local officials, as well as Key Food executives such as CEO Dean Janeway, COO George Knobloch, CFO Sharon Konzelman and VP of Business Development John Durante, were in attendance. The event included a ribbon-cutting ceremony and free vendor sampling.

“We’re thrilled to welcome The Food Emporium Brooklyn Market to our family of supermarkets!” said Durante. “I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off our 80th year than with this grand opening celebration. This beautiful store offers the kind of high-quality grocery experience that exemplifies our vision.”

The 10,000-square-foot store features a bakery with fresh handmade bread available daily; an ample organic selection spanning the entire store, a full gourmet deli with a variety of specialty cheeses, fresh meal solutions prepared in-house daily, salads and even catering options; and seafood and meat items that can be customized and sliced to order. For added convenience, the location has a free parking lot for customers and offers a 10 percent discount for seniors, military veterans, police officers and firefighters seven days a week. To further support the Bay Ridge community, The Food Emporium Brooklyn Market is donating a portion of all of its sales to St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church.

“It’s our mission is to serve the Bay Ridge community in any way that we can, and we’re confident that as part of the Key Food family of supermarkets we’ll be able to do that even better than before,” noted store owner Hajer Elayyan. “We look forward to sharing our success with the community.” The Elayyans have operated a store at the site since 2014.

New York-based Key Food purchased the well-known New York metropolitan-area banner name and the associated intellectual property of The Food Emporium in late 2015 from the bankrupt A&P, which has ceased operations. The co-op operates five other stores under The Food Emporium banner in Manhattan and Albertson, N.Y.

Key Food comprises more than 240 primarily member-owned and corporate grocery stores In addition to Key Food, these stores operate under various other banners, among them Food Universe, The Food Emporium, SuperFresh, Key Food Marketplace, Food Dynasty, Urban Market, and Gala Fresh in all five boroughs, Long Island, Upstate New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
