Hy-Vee Plans First Store in Wisconsin

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Hy-Vee Inc. is planning to open a new supermarket in Madison, Wis. -- the first new state the chain will expand in nearly 20 years.

Pending approval from the city, Hy-Vee will build a 90,000-square-foot
store in Madison on the site of an abandoned Kmart on the city's
east side, Chris Friesleben, a Hy-Vee spokeswoman, told Progressive Grocer.

Friesleben said the approval/permit process will likely take several months, after which time Hy-Vee will determine a final timeline for construction.

Hy-Vee, which operates nearly stores and 26 drug stores in Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri and South Dakota, hasn't expanded into a new state since 1988 when it built a store in Kansas.
