HEB Joining Central Texas's Green Program

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Regional chain H.E. Butt Grocery Co. here is the latest retailer seeing green. The grocer is participating in a program in which Central Texas counties and retailers are launching environmental initiatives to encourage residents to think green.

Over the weekend, HEB gave away 3,000 compact florescent light bulbs, according to published reports. The light bulbs use less than a third of the energy of standard incandescent bulbs to provide the same amount of light, and last up to 10 times longer, according to the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection.

HEB is not new to the green movement. According to its Web site, the retailer designs its facilities to be sustained with minimal effect on the environment by implementing cost-effective and energy-efficient strategies.

HEB was recognized last year by the EPA as a top retail buyer of green power.
