HEB Customers Donate $302,500 for Texas Food Banks

Austin, Texas-based HEB’s Help End Hunger campaign raised $302,500 and the chain donated $45,000 to 16 Texas food banks this year. Donations made 2008 a record year, according to company officials.

The annual campaign ran from May 21 through Aug. 15. Customers used tear-off coupons in the amounts of $1, $3 and $5 at checkout to add donations to their grocery bills.

In 2007, the Texas chain donated more than 25 million pounds of products, valued at $35 million to food banks. The annual Help End Hunger campaign is part of HEB’s Food Bank Assistance Program that began in 1982 and supports 26 food banks throughout Texas and Mexico. In turn, the food banks serve more than 5,000 organizations. The 300+ store-grocer has won many awards for its food assistance programs.
