Harris Teeter, Vendor Donate Peaches to Hungry

Harris Teeter and one of its vendors, Titan Farms, have donated more than 34,000 pounds of peaches to North Carolina food banks as part of Titan's third annual Peaches with a Purpose program. The donations were made over the past two weeks.

Ridge Spring, N.C.-based Titan, the largest peach grower on the East Coast, started the program to help feed the underserved while raising awareness of the issue of food insecurity. During August, all North Carolina Harris Teeter stores and Titan donated a percentage of all peaches purchased to food banks. The total was divided between Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina, in Winston-Salem, and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, in Charlotte.

"Fresh produce is scarce in food banks across the country, and we are happy to be able to contribute nutritious items to those in need," said Danna Robinson, communication manager for Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter.

The food banks began giving out the peaches to schools and other populations on Aug. 28. Oregon-based Salem Produce LLC helped transport the donated product.

A wholly owned subsidiary of The Kroger Co., Harris Teeter employs about 28,000 associates at stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland, Delaware, Florida and the District of Columbia.
