Harris Teeter Events Fight Hunger

Greensboro, N.C.-based Harris Teeter donated over $46,000 to grand champion winners at the North Carolina State Fair Junior Livestock Auction. The grocer placed winning bids on the Grand Champion steer, lamb, barrow and turkey. The protein from the livestock auction will be sold, and the proceeds donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

In another hunger initiative, Harris Teeter is hosting its annual Harvest Feast Food Drive, which started in 2003. The drive gives shoppers the chance to help restock food bank shelves during the holiday season.

In the 2007 drive, Harris Teeter and its shoppers donated over $156,000 in gift cards to food bank partners.

The grocer also hosts three Harvest Feast dinners each year and plans to serve over 15,000 meals to those in need of a Thanksgiving dinner.

Starting Oct. 29, shoppers can purchase $5 and $20 Harvest Feast donation cards at checkout. When the drive concludes on Dec. 2, Harris Teeter will distribute the cards to food banks in the amount raised in their service areas. If a shopper prefers to purchase and donate non-perishable items, collection bins will be available.
