Harris Teeter to Enter D.C. Market
WASHINGTON - Matthews, N.C.-based supermarket chain Harris Teeter has signed a lease to open its first store in the District, and plans to aggressively expand presence in the region, the Washington Business Journal reports.
A Harris Teeter spokeswoman confirmed the supermarket chain has signed the lease in Adams Morgan, according to the report. The Adams Morgan site, which includes some parking, is the 40,000-square-foot Citadel building at 17th Street and Kalorama Road NW. It's smaller than a typical Harris Teeter.
Company president Fred Morganthall would not say a final deal has been made, although he did attend an advisory neighborhood commission meeting in Adams Morgan last month and spoke to the group about the company's history, product lines and commitment to local hiring.
Sources told the Washington Business Journal that Harris Teeter plans at least six, and perhaps as many as 30, stores in the region. However, one expert noted that operating even 25 stores in the area would be physically impossible.
The company will likely focus primarily on Northern Virginia for future growth, the sources said.
Harris Teeter entered Washington's grocery market in 1999. The company also runs six stores in northern Virginia.
In total, Harris Teeter, which is owned by Charlotte, N.C.-based Ruddick Corp., operates 140 stores.
