Harris Teeter to Build DC That Will Employ 400

Harris Teeter is planning to open a 1.5 million-square-foot distribution center in Virginia’s Caroline County that’s expected to employ 400 people, according to a published report.

The company will begin construction in 2017 on the first phase of the project, which will result in 650,000 square feet of space, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reported. When completed, the facility will occupy about 190 acres. The total project is likely to cost more than $200 million, Gary Wilson, Caroline County’s economic development director, told the newspaper, adding that the facility is the county’s largest-ever economic development undertaking.

The Carmel Church area, where the distribution center will be located, also has DCs operated by candy maker Russell Stover and retailer Value City Furniture.

A subsidiary of The Kroger Co., Matthews, N.C.-based Harris Teeter has more than 230 stores and three fuel centers in seven states, including Virginia, and about 28,000 employees.
