Hannaford Offering Gift Cards From Other Retailers
SCARBOROUGH, Maine -- In addition to selling its own gift cards, since last autumn Hannaford Bros. has been carrying cards from about 20 other retailers, including Best Buy; Bed, Bath & Beyond; Chili's; Old Navy; and Starbucks.
The New England retailer, based here, makes a small commission on each sale, Hannaford spokeswoman Caren Epstein told the Morning Sentinel in Maine. Epstein added that the idea came from customers calling in to the grocer's customer service center. The shoppers were interested in convenience when buying gift cards for the holidays. Most of the retailers' gift cards were chosen because customers requested them.
According to Hannaford, the cards sold well during the holidays and have been selling steadily for special occasions such as birthdays and Valentine's Day. The company expects sales of the gift cards to be brisk for June graduations and the back-to-school season.
