H-E-B Seeks School Standouts

Applications for the 2011 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards, which seeks to recognize outstanding public school teachers, principals, schools and school districts with monetary awards ranging from $5,000 to $100,000, will be accepted through Dec. 28.

In 2011, H-E-B will be celebrating the 10th year of the program, which has grown to become the largest monetary rewards program for educators in Texas and one of the largest in the nation.

In honor of the 10th anniversary, a new awards category has been introduced: the H-E-B Fit Campus Award. The new category will recognize 10 campuses that are going above and beyond to educate children, parents and staff members about the importance of health and wellness. The winning campuses will receive the designation as an “H-E-B Fit Campus” and a cash prize of $10,000 each.

All applications will be reviewed during a regional judging process, with 225 semifinalists receiving an H-E-B Gift Card and a certificate of recognition from H-E-B Chairman and CEO Charles Butt. Finalists, representing five Texas regions, will also be selected during the process and invited to compete on a statewide level for additional cash prizes.

The awards program was launched in 2002 in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators as a way to support public education in Texas. Since its inception, more than $5 million has been awarded to more than 1,700 educators and 500 schools and districts across the state.

Finalists will receive an invitation for an all-expense-paid trip to the statewide competition and awards ceremony to be held on May 15, 2011, at the Hilton Austin. At the ceremony, 20 grand-prize winners – two principals, six teachers and two school districts – will be announced at a celebratory awards dinner. Among these winners H-E-B will also recognize 10 “Fit” campuses.

Each winning principal—one elementary school and one secondary school—will receive a $10,000 cash prize and a $25,000 grant. The winning large school district will receive a $100,000 cash prize. The winning small school district will receive $50,000. The 10 winners of the H-E-B Fit Campus award will each receive a $10,000 cash prize.

San Antonio-based H-E-B operates more than 300 stores in Texas and Mexico. More information is at www.heb.com/education.
