H-E-B Lauds Local Educators
SAN ANTONIO -- H-E-B recognized nine grand-prize winners of its Excellence in Education Awards last week. In addition, the chain, based here, recognized 40 educators and five school districts as statewide finalists in the program.
Since the inception of the program, now in its fifth year, H-E-B has awarded more than $2 million to 773 educators, and 155 schools and districts across the state.
"We're really proud of the impact that this program has already had," said Kate Rogers, director of the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. "We've had phenomenal feedback from previous winners who tell us that the awards have changed their lives. We truly feel that if even one fantastic person decides to make a lifetime commitment to a career in education because of these awards, we've met our goal."
The chain distributed more than half a million dollars in cash and grants this year to Texas educators and school districts though the program.
H-E-B launched the Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a way to support public education in Texas. A major goal of the Excellence in Education awards is to make a statement about the happenings in Texas public schools -- to spotlight best practices and to celebrate the work of Texas educators.
The retailer began by asking customers, employees, and community members to submit the names of their favorite educators, administrators, and districts. This year, H-E-B received more than 5,000 nominations. Each nominee was sent an application packet asking them to share their professional experiences, educational philosophies, and achievements both in and out of the classroom. H-E-B received over 1,000 completed applications, which were reviewed by teams of judges from the Colleges of Education at Trinity University and Texas State University.
