H-E-B Grocery in San Antonio to Cut Jobs, Add Seasonal Workers
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - H.E. Butt Grocery Co. said Wednesday that it will realign about 100 administrative positions, with more than half of those employees expected to lose their jobs, according to a report published in the San Antonio Express-News.
At the same time, H-E-B plans to hire another 300 positions in its customer service area to gear up for the holiday season. Winell Herron, H-E-B Group v.p. of public affairs and diversity, said the realignment is a routine evaluation and is being done to improve the company's efficiency. She added it was also a part of the company's annual budgeting process.
The affected positions represent a little more than one-tenth of 1 percent of the company's total work force of 60,000. Herron said that starting today, the company will meet with the 100 employees to see which ones may be qualified for other positions within the company. Those losing their jobs will receive outplacement assistance.
About 85 to 90 of the positions affected are from the company's headquarters in San Antonio. Asked to cite an example of a recent realignment by the company, Herron said H-E-B restructured four years ago, when it planned to start selling groceries online, but didn't go forward with the project.
