Giant/Martin’s Acquiring Nell’s Shurfine Store

Giant Food Stores has entered into an agreement with Keene, N.H.-based C&S Wholesale Grocers Inc. to acquire the Nell’s Shurfine Market located in Carlisle, Pa. Following the acquisition, which is expected to close by the beginning of March, there will be two Giant stores in Carlisle, the banner's longtime hometown.

The 51,800-square-foot store will close temporarily on Feb. 28 to be converted to a Giant Food Store scheduled to open in late March. The pharmacy will stay open during the conversion, and Nell’s employees will be able to apply for positions at the rebannered store.

“Giant has been proud to call the Carlisle community home for more than 90 years,” said Giant/Martin’s President Tom Lenkevich. “We are always looking for ways to grow our business and provide convenient locations to help our customers save money, save time and eat well.”

The converted store is expected to feature Giant’s newest marketplace-style produce section, its latest bakery department layout, an updated and expanded prepared food and deli department, and a larger natural and organic department.

A division of Ahold USA, Giant/Martin’s operates 196 stores in four states and employs more than 33,000 associates.
