Giant Landover Launches Pediatric Cancer Fundraiser

Giant Food LLC has rolled out its annual fundraising program to benefit the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center and The Children’s Cancer Foundation Inc.

Giant’s Pediatric Cancer Fundraising Program intends to raise $1.6 million this year through sales of $5 coupon books valued at $85. All proceeds will go directly to support pediatric cancer research and care.

“Every year, I am inspired by our stores’ enthusiasm to raise funds and awareness for pediatric cancer research and care,” said Gordon Reid, president of Landover, Md.-based Giant Food.

Each year, four local children who are patients at the center are selected as program ambassadors. This year’s ambassadors are Riley, 10 (pilocytic astrocytoma); Amir, 13 (Hodgkin’s lymphoma); Connor, 10 (Rosai-Dorfman disease); and Grace, 11 (stage IV non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma).

“Throughout September, which is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Giant is supporting pediatric cancer research, and the work that our faculty at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center does every day,” said Dr. Donald Small, director of pediatric oncology at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, in Baltimore. “With Giant’s help and the help of its customers, we hope to raise $1.6 million for childhood cancer this year.”

Since 2005, Giant Food has raised $16.3 million for pediatric cancer research.

An Ahold Delhaize company, Giant Food operates 169 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia, and employs about 20,000 associates.
