Giant-Landover Extends Military Family Campaign
Giant Food LLC has extended its in-store giving campaign to support the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro) and aid military families across the Mid-Atlantic region. Through April 6, the Ahold USA division will sell CareOne care packages for the troops and accept monetary donations at checkout to fund USO-Metro programs.
Each $5 care package contains a toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, lip balm, hand sanitizer and ibuprofen. Fort Myer, Va.-based USO-Metro will give them out at airport lounges across the region as troops pass through. Shoppers can also add $1, $3, or $5 to their grocery bills at checkout, and all 173 Giant stores will feature a station where children can make cards for service members.
Giant first joined forces with the USO-Metro in March 2011 during the grocery chain’s 75th anniversary year. At the end of last year’s month-long giving campaign, Giant delivered $108,000 and almost 10,000 pounds of food to the nonprofit organization to help support its programs and establish a food pantry at Fort Belvoir in Virginia. Additionally, hundreds of soldiers received hand-decorated cards created by kids at the banner’s card-making stations.
Landover, Md.-based Giant operates supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, and the District of Columbia, employing about 22,000 associates.
