Giant Food Landover Finds Pins in Bread

LANDOVER, Md. -- Ahold USA Giant Food here called in the U.S. Food & Drug Administration to investigate a case of apparent food tampering after a manager at a store in Dundalk, Md. discovered two pins in a loaf of raisin bread.

According to published reports, Baltimore County police said that the store manager found the bread on a shelf Wednesday in the baked goods department. No customer had purchased the loaf. Giant's v.p. of corporate affairs, Barry Scher, said that the case was "an isolated incident, one report at one store."

Earlier this year, a series of mysterious food-tampering cases, many of them involving pins and needles, occurred mainly in some Ahold-owned Giant-Carlisle stores in the Bethlehem, Pa. area; but those incidents and the one in Dundalk appear to be unrelated.
