Giant Food Asks Public to Donate to Local Food Banks
LANDOVER, Md. -- Giant Food, LLC, based here, this week began appealing to its customers to contribute money or food at any Giant or Super G store, through a program the company created to help area food banks during the summer, which is when the charities experience greater demand from clients.
"As schools let out for the summer, many children lose access to free-lunch programs, and this is where the food banks step in to fulfill an important need," explained Giant Food v.p. of public affairs Barry Scher in a statement.
The grocer's "Checkout Hunger" program allows shoppers to donate to local food banks when they pay for their purchases. Customers can also contribute nonperishable food items at any Giant or Super G location. The program is assisting food banks from New Jersey to Virginia.
"Combined, the…food banks in Giant and Super G areas serve over 150,000 people every week," noted Maryland Food Bank executive director Bill Ewing. "The local food banks rely on the food and funds collected from Giant's Checkout Hunger program to help hungry people avoid [having to make a choice between paying for food or paying for rent or health care costs."
The program, which began July 10, runs through Aug. 31.
