Giant Eagle Market Districts Set Foie Gras Free; PETA Cheers
PITTSBURGH -- Giant Eagle here has stopped selling foie gras in its two Market District supermarket locations, a move that came on the heels of pressure from animal activist organizations for the chain to stop selling the product.
According to local press reports, Giant Eagle said it decided against selling foie gras in its Market District stores because of concerns about seasonal availability, shelf space, and sales trends, and not because of the animal rights groups' objections.
Nevertheless, the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) attempted to take credit for influencing Giant Eagle's decision, which it said came "barely three days after [PETA] posted an action alert on PETA.org asking supporters to contact O'Hara Township-based grocery chain Giant Eagle and urge the company to stop selling foie gras."
On its Web site, PETA said Giant Eagle has informed the organization that none of its 230 stores would sell the product.
"By taking foie gras off its shelves, Giant Eagle has made a smart and ethical business decision," PETA v.p. Bruce Friedrich said.
