Giant Eagle Launches GetGo C-stores

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Giant Eagle has spread its wings into the convenience store business with two new "GetGo from Giant Eagle" c-stores in the Ohio area.

The venture began last summer when Giant Eagle entered into a partnership with Guttman Enterprises, which operates 27 Crossroads convenience stores.

In the next several months, many of those Crossroads sites that meet Giant Eagle's new design standards will become GetGo locations. In addition, new standalone stores will be built on 4,500 square feet, compared to smaller 600- to 1,800-square-feet versions such as those that opened this week in Giant Eagle parking lots. Gas stations that already have been built at 13 Giant Eagles will be remodeled and renamed GetGos.

The GetGo operation will officially be run by Dan Pastor, who was with Crossroads and will now be chief operating officer of Crossroads Convenience.

Officials hope the affiliation with Giant Eagle will mean customers feel they already know the brand and trust it, yet they hope to avoid building expectations that everything will be just like the grocery stores.

Beyond calling expansion plans "aggressive," Giant Eagle isn't saying how many GetGo stores can be expected to open within the next year or two.
