Giant Eagle to Debut Market District Express in Columbus
Giant Eagle plans to open a two-story Market District Express store in the Columbus, Ohio, suburb of Bexley.
The new store, which will reportedly open in 2015, would be a first for the Pittsburgh-based retailer as a smaller hybrid format of its flagship Market District and its Express formats.
A Columbus-based developer, Continental Real Estate Cos., notified the Bexley community about the plan May 14 at a City Council meeting, according to Columbus Business First.
Giant Eagle presently operates five Market District stores – four in the Pittsburgh area and one in the Columbus market, while it also operates two small-format Giant Eagle Express stores, the first of which opened in Harmar Township, Pa., more than five years ago and the second opened last year in downtown Indiana, Pa.
The new Market District Express store is expected to be built on a 1.7-acre property that’s being redeveloped for retail from its prior use as Bexley City Hall.
As Business First previously reported, the new Market District Express could include a second-level patio where customers could dine, similar to the original Market District that Giant Eagle operates in Settlers Ridge in Robinson Township.
Giant Eagle Inc. operates 229 supermarkets and 187 fuel and convenience stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, northern West Virginia and Maryland.
